As the e-commerce landscape continues to evolve, Shopify is betting big on AI-powered shopping agents, with traffic from these tools increasing seven times since January and AI-driven orders rising by 11 times. This move reflects broader industry trends, where AI is being hailed as a game-changer for online shopping. According to Shopify President Harley Finkelstein, “AI is not just a feature at Shopify. It is central to our engine that powers everything we build.”
The company’s partnership with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is a key factor in this growth. Shopify’s access to data from millions of merchants and billions of transactions gives it a unique advantage in the AI era. Finkelstein notes that the company’s “founder mode” mentality allows it to ship products quickly, making it well-positioned to capitalize on the AI revolution. Internal tools like Scout, which uses AI to analyze merchant feedback, are also helping Shopify make better product decisions.
Shopify’s Q3 financial results showed revenue up 32% to $2.84 billion, with a profit of $264 million. While the company’s operating income missed estimates, its focus on AI-powered shopping agents is likely to pay off in the long run. As Finkelstein says, “We’ve been building and investing in this infrastructure to make it really easy to bring shopping into every single AI conversation.” With 64% of shoppers saying they’re likely to use AI when making purchases, Shopify is well-positioned to lead the charge in agentic commerce.
The company is working with other AI leaders, including Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, to develop new in-chat shopping experiences. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, Shopify’s ability to adapt and innovate will be crucial to its success. With its strong foundation in e-commerce and its commitment to AI, Shopify is poised to revolutionize the way we shop online.
