As the battle for short-form video supremacy continues, Instagram has taken a significant step forward with the introduction of its Watch History feature for Reels. This move reflects broader industry trends towards enhancing user experience and personalization. With Watch History, users can now easily revisit previously watched Reels, eliminating the frustration of trying to recall a particular video.
According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, “Have you ever tried to get back to a reel that you’d seen on Instagram and you just can’t find it?” The new feature, accessible through the ‘Profile’ and ‘Settings’ menus under ‘Your Activity,’ allows users to browse their watch history, sorted by date, the past week or month, or a specific date range. Additionally, users can remove Reels from their watch history if desired.
This development is particularly noteworthy as it brings Instagram Reels closer to parity with TikTok, which has had a similar feature for a few years. The introduction of Watch History also underscores Meta’s efforts to build out Instagram Reels with features that are already available on the popular short-form app. For instance, Instagram recently allowed creators to connect multiple reels in a series and launched support for Picture-in-Picture viewing, both of which are already available on TikTok.
The Watch History feature is a significant improvement for users who have previously had to rely on workarounds, such as downloading their data from the app and sifting through it to retrieve their watch history. By providing a more streamlined and user-friendly experience, Instagram is likely to increase user engagement and retention. As the social media landscape continues to evolve, features like Watch History will play a crucial role in shaping the user experience and driving platform loyalty.
